The Both/And Church

Not minutes ago I finished listening to the 3 part series Rick Atchley did at Richland Hills concerning that congregation's decision to add a Saturday night instrumental service with communion. I know I will listen to it again. I want to urge each and every one of you to give it a fair hearing. Be sure to have your Bible as you listen, because the whole study is bathed in scripture, after scripture, after scripture. If you are in the practice of making scripture fit YOUR agenda, doctrine or for sure won't appreciate this study. If you love your heritage more than you love God's mission, you also won't appreciate this study. I would invite you to email me or call me if, after listening to this series with an open heart and mind, you believe that you heard an untruth being taught.

Here is the link:

May God be glorified in all we do in His name!

We've listened to it several times--and have studied it--I think we will be attending the Saturday night service starting Feb 10! We are excited to see what God will do.

I do hope people that have questions about what is happening at RH will listen to this with an open mind. As Rick has said--he would rather someone hear what he has to say--than hear about what he has said.

David, You get around! Notables (at least in my mind) like Patrick Mead and others mention your influence on them and of course it was for good. I have been a fan of Mead's stuff since you pointed him out to me. Thanks.

Now for your post. Isn't it a shame that many brothers (and sisters) across the landscape will treat Rick and NRH with the utmost disrespect and slander them without restraint, all in the interest of "being right". Is that sad or what?

The greatest problem with the harshest critics of Atchley, Lucado, Shelly, Fudge, Garret, etc, etc, is not instruments vs. a cappella singing, nor is it because they are "change agents" or "liberals", the problem is that their critics do not understand the doctrine of salvation.

How do I know? If they did they would not be wasting ink and bandwidth warning that these men are in danger of loosing their souls because of a piano, or some non essential they teach.

Poor Bible hermeneutics produces poor theology which produces poor doctrine which produces poor practices which produces poor disciples. And these poorly taught men become unloving critics of anyone not exactly like them.

I thank God for the above suspects I named and many others who approach the open book with an open heart.

Grace and Peace,
Royce Ogle

I will give it a listen, thanks for the link. I have just recently heard of this "controversy".

Ahhh, us change agents.

What Royce Ogle said! Great comment to a challenging topic in our fellowship. Thanks for linking us up D.U. I plan to listen and study.

You do know that none of the "proof texts" for music in the church has anything to do with the qahal, synagogue or Church of Christ in the wilderness. Christ outlawed "vocal or instrumental rejoicing" elevatef forms of teaching.

The synagogue existed parallel to the sacrificial system to which God abandoned primarily the Levi tribe because of musical idolatry.

The godly people were quarantined from the temple grounds when animal sacrifices were made. Using the Burnt offering of the "goats" as the time when David's instruments made a great noise is a fatal flaw: Christ in the prophets denies that God commanded sacrifices or burnt offerings.

Church is always defined as "A school of Christ" (Christ, Jesus, Paul, church history and the Campbells."

Instruments or any loud rejoicing is outlawed when Jesus comes to be our teacher when the elders "teach that which has been taught" or "that which is written for our learning" (Rom 15)

I am working on John 13 which is the Judas story connected to Psalm 109, 69 and 41. If you don't define words you can lead people into what Jesus died to remove: laded burdens and burden laders.
