Unscriptural
I have been hearing that term ALL my life......."unscriptural". How about you?
If so, what do you perceive that it means? If you can think of some ways you have heard it used, please share them with everybody.

I can tell you this.......the heat in Arkansas is for sure unscriptural! :)
GOODNESS! The other afternoon I got in my car and the temperature gauge said "115".
No foolin. I know that the parents who arrive in Searcy for the first time must feel like they are dropping their kids off in Hades. I hate for that to be their first impression of Harding. I'll never forget waking up the first morning I was here in 1974 and my sheets being wet from sweat.....and I am not even a heavy sweater. The best thing (best thing?) about this heat is that we for sure will appreciate even more the wonderful fall weather we will have in a few weeks. It can't get here soon enough for me. I think that must be another reason I love knowing football season is not far away.......I subconsciously associate football with autumn weather.
How many days till your team has it's first game? The Memphis Harding Academy Lions play a week from this Friday, which is August 24! Bama wins their first game Sept. 1. :)

My Cardinals are making a comeback! Is there a better story in sports right now than the Rick Ankiel one? I don't think so. This has Hollywood written all over it.
WAY TO GO RICK!!!!!!!!

It is unscriptural for it to be this hot and this dry in Alabama....this is NOT the dessert!!
Roll Tide 9/1....can't wait!!
In August 1980, with the temperature somewhere in the low triple digits, my mother and I were driving across the Arkansas delta on our way to Harding. Somewhere around Wynne, she turned to me, and with tears streaming down her face, said, "I can't believe your going to college in this God-forsaken place."
Once she got to Searcy and saw the campus, she was finally convinced that Arkansas actually had trees, and she settled down a bit. We drop off Number One at Bama tomorrow. Will my wife cry? Is the Pope Catholic? Will I cry? I'll try not to, but I ain't making any guarantees.
Unscriptural? That means you don't agree with me and are therefore wrong. What's so hard to understand about that?
Go Cards, and Roll Tide, Roll!
If it's something I didn't grow up "doing" at church, or if it's something "denominations" do, it can be classified as "unscriptural" very easily because it is not a specific command, an example that seems relevant to me or it is not a necessary-per-my-reasoning inference. Interestingly, things left unsaid can be unscriptural or scriptural, depending on your POV (e.g. instrumental music in worship or located preachers). So, it is really a handy term to use. Couldn’t get along without it.

Hey Dave,
I am quite familiar with the "unscriptural" term, though my personal favorite is "rightly divided". Of course, it has to do with Bible interpretation, but I like to use it to refer to lots of other things. "I like the way he parts his hair; it's rightly divided." "Pizza Pro did well tonight...our pizza is rightly divided." etc...
Hope you guys are doing well, getting cranked up for another school year!

Were you umpiring baseball in Searcy in the summer of 1980. Now that was hot!
For me, "unscriptural" just means "it ain't in there."
Temperatures in Arkansas are not only unscriptural, they are unholy.
David - I think that's one of the reasons I love football season too! I always associate it with cooler weather.
That church across town has a social hall, they're unscriptural.
That guy over there unscripturally divorced his first wife.
Basically, when a person says something is unscriptural, that means they don't agree with it. At a church I worked at loooooong ago, we were going to paint the name of the church on the side of a van we had just bought. A man said, "That's just unscriptural!" When pressed, he said, "Well, it's not expedient." Ahhh. That's different. Keep up the great posts, friend. JW
Yes Shannon, I did umpire the summer of 80! I also had an acre and half of cucumbers with two other guys that burnt up in about a week after the weather turned so hot. I ended up driving trucks that summer, and will never forget driving down a street in Lewisville, Texas one night and seeing the time and temperature flashing "11:00 and 97 degrees". YUCK! Glad it's at least not THAT bad.......yet.

That summer of your (our) freshman year, Tim Baird and I were driving south to Harding and the bank clock in Batesville said 111 degrees. Of course, it's always cooler there in the hills.

David,
I love this post first off.
I believe that anything unscriptural something that we have no example of in scripture. No basis in scripture.
David you can see my post on going to the exreme for more information. I believe se should strive as God's Church to be Biblic. We shouldn't let man put any budden on us which is not in the book and I don't think that we should go to the extreme and abuse the grace of God. I believe should strive in all things to be disciples of Christ. We should be thinkful of grace that saves us through faith. We should us the Bible as a map in life as David says, "You word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." As Christians we should know that there are only two commands that God give us to follow: "Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, strength, mind. Second love your neighbor as your self." Again, excellent post brother. Keep it up!
I hope Ankiel is not a 1 hit or a 3 HR wonder for the Cards. Actually they could use him back in the bullpen if he could find his groove. "Unscriptural" was what every other church was besides ours! That's the way I remember it. I see Bama being 2-1 after week 3. It will seem like 111 degrees that day in Tuscaloosa when the Hogs roll in. That's not trash talking my brother; just fact. :) Mike the Eyeguy-that drive btween Memphis and Searcy is a killer unless you love farmland. I'm a Wynne Yellowjacket and the ridge at Wynne is the only bump in route in that 2 hour drive. I'm sure many a tears have been shed on that drive; and many tickets handed out!
You said: "I can tell you this.......the heat in Arkansas is for sure unscriptural!" What do you mean unscriptural? Haven't you read about that lake of fire stuff.
Speaking of weeping and nashing of teeth, I'm afraid you may be in for some of that on Sept. 29, my friend. FSU vs UA. The Noles are back!
I once heard someone say you couldn't sing during the Lord's Supper because it was unscriptural to mix two "acts of worship."
A lady called me once to ask where we found scriptural authority to meet in home in small groups on Sunday nights. Couldn't help myself; I told her it was right next to the passage that said you should come back to the church building.
See you the next appointed time!
Dave,
Not sure I can define "unscriptural" but can sure give some examples.
1) The time you were supposed to be teaching me how to swim and held me up by my feet and dropped me head-first from a pier into Shoals Creek - unscriptural.
2) The time you were supposed to babysit me and as soon as Mom and Dad left you took my Stevie Wonder album, record player, and locked me out of the house - unscriptural.
3) The time you tried to grab the biggest piece of fried chicken during the Sunday prayer - unscriptural (Dad instinctually suspecting foul play, seeing you, and stabbing your greedy, grabbing hand with a fork - scriptural).
4) The week I was first allowed to use the phone and you walking by and hanging the phone up every time I made a call - unscriptural. My reactive statement to you - understandable but also unscriptural. The resultant beating I took from Dad - definitely unscriptural.
5) Mom using a switch that she made us (probably not you) go out back and cut - unscriptural.
6) Auburn blocking two punts against Alabama and returning them for touchdowns to win the game - unscriptural.
Your brother,
Bryan
Ahhh......isn't family GREAT! Bryan, I see the apple didn't fall too far from the tree, as you have the gift of extreme embellishment passed on to you by our father! :)
Don't put another link in that chain with my niece or nephew, please.......or is it already too late?
So you want to talk about family, do you? My definition of "unscriptural" would be to cheat at cards, and then LIE about not doing it!! :) And yes, you most certainly did, baby brother.
Should I even hint to the misuse of boogers? Nah, this is a nice, mature, and family audience. Suffice to say, that was WAY beyond "unscriptural"!
But, I couldn't agree more about the Auburn-Alabama fiasco in 72. TOTALLY UNSCRIPTURAL! God must have taken a quick bathroom break or something. Or quite possibly He had some more pressing issue that diverted His attention. It for sure couldn't have been because He is an Auburn fan! :)
Thanks for stopping by, you silly boy. Keep fabricating stories, and I am going to get you on one of your own FBI lie-detector machines. We'll settle that cheating at cards discussion once and for all! :)

I was just down in Arkansas with a big fat 104 in Jonesboro. Now I am back in minnesot with a rainy 57. What a swing.
That 104 is not just unscriptural or unholy - it is purely and simply of the Devil himself. It is the effects of the bile of the Devil being poured out somewhere near Arkansas.
I tell you what, I'll go up 20 degrees if you go down 20 degrees.
Punt, Bama, Punt!
My daddy's feelings about my conversion to Auburn from Alabama so many years ago... scriptural. ("The first shall be last and the last shall be first" and all that stuff!)
