The Dreaded Vols

It's Tennessee week! Most people think that Auburn is the biggest rival to Alabama, and for some people that may hold true. But for folks from North Alabama, there is one team you grew up learning to hate.......the Vols. Auburn fans are your neighbors.......Vol fans are from that other state up north with the Hound Dogs and Coon Skin caps. And ORANGE.......what' up with picking ORANGE for your school color? Giving them their due, they have whipped us 9 out of the last 10 years. Not good. If I can only have one win........let it be the Tennessee game, PLEASE! So I will be on pins and needles until about 6 tomorrow night. By the way, we had a blast watching the Tide win on the last play of the game last week in Oxford. Hey, a win is a win! :) ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!

Colorado was unbelievable beautiful! I had never been in October, and the Aspens were turning and it just looked like something out of a post card or Hollywood production. You can count on me going back in October from now on.

Thanks to all of you who commented here, sent emails, sent cards or called me concerning my 50th! American Airlines even let me fly first class on my big day. I had a wonderful day, and I still am walking without a cane....barely. :) The best gift I got was the gift of friendship from wonderful friends like you! Thanks for making me a rich man and blessed far beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of.

How many people do you know that won't listen to contemporary Christian music because they think it is wrong? I'm not talking about in church, I'm talking about on the radio or CD's. Or do they not listen to it because they know if they do, they will be very inconsistent in their theology? I have no doubt some don't listen because they think it is wrong, but I think there are a BOAT load who don't listen NOT because they think it is sinful, but because they see how ludicrous they would look to accept it one way, but not the other.

Remember.....worship is a 24/7 deal. Or is it?

Is American Airlines wonderful or what!!! Glad you enjoyed Colorado--I love the fall colors!

Yes, I have known people who would not listen to instrumental praise music on cds or the radio--but they listen to instrumental Christmas music. Everyone draws lines different places!

There are some really good things in Knoxville--and I don't know why they chose orange, but Crittmer has helped me learn to love it.

I hear people talking about the difference in "corporate worship" and what ever else kind of worship.....I continue to be confused since I have believed for a very long time that all of life for the Christian is worship...."whatsoever you do in word or deed..." If listening to songs with instrumental music and lyrics that are worshipful or spiritual in their message is o.k. outside of "corporate worship", then it would seem to me that it would be like taking His name in vain or worshipping in vain because it is not worship. Maybe the reason churches, and even our nation struggle with "issues" and have difficulty deciding what is true and what is a right, is because in both cases we want to divide life up in compartments. If we aren't in "church" then it is o.k. to .....whatever. Perhaps we need to talk more about the idea that breathing and seeing and thinking... and living makes us debtors....we would not BE were it not for Him, and worshiping Him is Why we live, and all that we do and all that we are or will ever be is a gift from Him. How can we not know that honoring, glorifying, and worshipping Him is the purpose and calling of every minute of every day. What is "corporate worship" anyway....I can't worship for you, nor you for me, so individually we choose to gather in one place to share and encourage one another, learn from each other and perhaps participate together in a memorial meal, but none of that is done by me for you or by you for me. Hearts desiring to worship gather in groups of 2 or 3, or hundreds maybe thousands, and some may worship while others just put in an appearance. What is the difference in "worship" experienced in a church building or in a home, or under the roof of a recreation hall, or under a tree in a park, or driving down the road. Is it the time of day or the day of the week, or the number of those gathered, or if there is a "preacher" present. Or maybe, it is a special event like a mission workshop. Who decides which worship is corporate and which is .....whatever other kind there is? If my family can sing along with a recording in our home or car, is that o.k. or not? This really is rather absurd....and are we not really missing the point?

I have often wondered why we chose to define our whole life as a Christian by the two hours we spend in church on Sunday. It is ludicrous to think that we have to get "it" so right that we focus so much on Sunday morning that we lose the idea of "living" and "being" a Christian all the time.

I have found when I focus on whether I am "right" on any issue, I lose the focus all together! Suddenly, everything gets out of focus and I turn a normal process into a demanding compromise that ends up being a law! It never seems to come out right.

I want to be a Christian 24/7, as you said and focus on what matters, not what is right!

It is early morning and I am not sure I made any sense in this response, but thanks for the blog and getting my brain in gear on Saturday.

After having to endure the Tide and my beloved Michigan Wolverines both winning on the last play of the game last week -- I am hoping that Bama beats the vols in a blowout today. My 41 year old heart can't take that much stress!

I'm finding increasing numbers of Church of Christ folks listening to contemporary Christian music. It used to be that no one did. My girlfriend (who is now my wife) introduced me to it in the mid 80's. I find that I can quote from popular Christian songs in my sermons, and a lot of folks have actually heard of the songs. In the past year and a half, we have taken groups from our church to concerts (Third Day, Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin and Steven Curtis Chapman).

ROLL TIDE!!!

04wisdom and pegc, thanks for both of your insightful comments.....and eveybody else's also. Jeff, let's take the Tide to victory and march on towards TL's Tigers! :) As for 3 mile Ivan, I still have the one you sent me 10 years or so ago. I keep wanting to live up to his example. :)

ROLL TIDE,

I was a tough convert to contemperary Christian music, but once converted...I wonder what I was thinking. For me it was not theology so much as I LOVED rock & roll....still do, but I choose to put better things in my head now. Thinking it is wrong is just.....ignorant. There have been many things I was once ignorant of, I am grateful God has opened my eyes...

As for the Tide... ROLL On!! I don't like orange and I don't like orange and blue....ROLL TIDE ROLL!!

NONE! PRAISE GOD!

Ahem.

Anyway, orange is particularly offensive. Even though I'm a Tennessean through and through, I ended up pulling for the University of Kentucky football.

Talk about depressing!

That nauseating Vol orange drove me away from Tennessee -- now my apartment literally overlooks the Philadelphia Eagles football field. Let's just say that Vol fans are much less rabid than people in Philly.
