Ross Cochran
This past Sunday, Ross brought a message concerning the "New Year" to our fellowship. If you have never had the blessing of sitting at Ross's feet, I hope that opportunity comes to you soon. I wish I could glean from his wisdom more often.
I just wanted to share one thought he communicated to us. This is usually the time of year when people make resolutions and intentions for a "new" year. Nothing wrong with that. But isn't it wonderful how God made it possible for those of us who believe to be able to start over ANYTIME we choose to? Ross communicated he believes that is one reason God created us to need sleep.....so that each morning we could seize the opportunity to start over if we wanted to. Isn't that what the writer in Lamentations 3 was saying when he said "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." I don't know about you, but most EVERY morning I do need to start over.......and several times during the day. Because of Jesus, I can. That is good news........that is Gospel.

A friend of mine does not make resolutions, but she picks a word-theme for the year. 2004 was "whimsy." She wanted to "bring whimsy into her life."
I liked the idea of a theme rather than a resolution so much that I tried to figure a theme of my own. I couldn't settle on one, so I have four. Utilize, explore, remember, and generous. In good sermon fashion, I made it into an acronym, URGE.
So, in 2005, I'm getting the URGE. In light of Ross' reflection on Lamentations, I will have a new opportunity every morning to get the URGE.
If God had meant us to get up at dawn, he wouldn't have made it come so early in the morning.
I know your focus is on morning, but what jumps out at me in this post-tsunami time from the verse is "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed ..." They had lost it all, including many lives and all their possessions in the Captivity, yet they were not consumed.
They must have realized the same thing Paul did in II Corinthians 4:7-9: "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed."So His compassions never fail, but as long as they renew us every morning, they're enough ... I guess that means God never promised us a rose garden, huh?
Keith, I think that explanation is as good as any to those who would ask how a loving God could allow something devastating. We humanly expect a loving God to prevent things like that, but our problem understanding it comes just from that expectation. We don't see anything past this physical life, and cannot begin to comprehend the tapestry or the weaver, so some choose to deny that He is there and active. I don't have the answers to say WHY those things happen, for exactly the same reason, and this makes the questions appear and makes them hard to answer at the same time.
