NBA

Well, the Beryl Markham post was a big hit! :) I thought maybe out of the 3 of you at least one would make SOME kind of observation. Note to self: No more posts about interesting women aviators.

Ok, let's move on to a topic that is almost taboo in our culture today....the demise of the NBA. Is it just me, or do you like me believe the character of the average professional basketball player is not what it was 15 or 20 years ago? Or is it that the media covers them closer now? Or is it that the media only tells you about the thugs, without ever giving you the stories about the David Robinson caliber people?
All I know is that during the winter I only watch College hoops, and pray for Spring to hurry up so baseball can get here. I NEVER......repeat N-E-V-E-R watch NBA games. With one exception, the play-offs.........and then probably only the finals,
and that is like pulling teeth. I would rather watch Australian rules football where the guy with the white hat looks like he is pulling his gun to draw on somebody in an ole western.....to signal a score. I would watch that crazy crocodile dude before I would watch an NBA game. ANYTHING on TV-Land gets the nod over the NBA.

So, am I a loner on this one or are others out there fed up with the National Thugball Association?

Here's hoping the NBA goes the way of the NHL. I love how the season has totally slipped away, and 99% of Americans either haven't noticed, or haven't cared. I did love the coverage of the ICE tournament or whatever was on NBC the other night...gotta love curling. I'd rather watch professional curling over basketball and hockey anyday.

And yes, Beryl Markham is cool. I just finished Hemingway's "True at First Light" and one of his gun bearers was named after a Kamba warrior who escorted her on her trip to somewhere...

That's all.

I have never been an NBA fan. Character has long been lacking in the sport, but my son who used to watch now prefers Poker!! Maybe that is the best commentary of all.

I would love to be a female aviator, and I did tell Terri you had motivated me to want to go to Africa. Sometimes I just comment on the inside.....

Since I'm originally from Indiana, I'd rather watch a bad basketball game than a good football game (SACRILEGE! I know), but NBA has been turned off in my house for quite a while. I've long since disowned the Pacers.

Though I hate to see IU struggle these days, I'd rather watch that than see Bobby Knight throw a chair - and frankly I can usually get my basketball fix from watching my sixth-grader and his teammates provide some pretty aggressive court action on Saturdays.

- For some reason, the Beryl post called to mind a scene from "Shrek" in which Gingy is being threatened with milk torture and dismemberment and is repeating his mantra "FindAHappyPlace FindAHappyPlace FindAHappyPlace"! I guess everyone has his Happy Place.

As long as it doesn't have a TV blaring NBA ...

I think the NHL can see the NBA in its rear view mirror. Lets not let the NBA accept the gold on fan appeal though. Professional sports in general have taken a nose dive in regard to fan viewership and acceptance. College sports are where its at with regard to fan fulfillment. I can watch any college and most high school basketball and football contests(much to my wifes dismay) and be brought to the edge of my seat with excitement because of what they play for-the love of the game...the purity of the sport. No one epidomizes this more than Coach K at Duke. How many coaches would turn down $2mil a year plus, plus, to stay in the college ranks and continue teaching kids, many of whom leave early. Granted, he gets compensated well, but he earned it too. (Had a loosing record his first 3 years at Duke before becoming the greatest b-ball coach of this era.)Does it get any better than the Cameron Crazies or the Rhoades Rowdies. Where else will you witness the participants and fans alike putting every thing they have on the line? Will the NBA, NFL, etc be around in 10 years? Probably so, but I hope the players are having to ride a bus or a train to get to their stadiums instead of a private plane or a stretch limo. The more and more decisions are based on bottom line dollars instead of attaining personal and team goals, to closer demise is being in ones grasp.
