Jesus's Birth

I am blessed to get to sit at the feet of Monte Cox each Sunday morning during Bible class! Here are some things we discussed today in class. Feel free to comment on some or all of them.

A) Why did God choose Jesus to be born under such humble circumstances?
B) Why come as a baby? Why not come as a 21 year old?
C) Why did our fellowship have such an aversion to Christmas for so long?

I am not sure that we will ever know the answers to A and B, and I'm ok with that.
I believe we will understand someday.....but only when HE is ready for us to understand. There is probably more than one answer to C. I'll go out on a limb here and say most of the answers for C are not good answers. Then again, "good" is relative, huh?

All I know is that it is now the week of Christmas!
"Let heaven and nature sing"!!

Don't you just love how Monte Cox makes you think. Great blog I've been thinking on the first two questions for the last couple of days, and wanted to let you know. And on the third question...I've given up trying to understand why our fellowship did and does anything. Sorry that was kind of nasty.

A) I don't know but I would think to make people in the same cirumstances feel that he could relate to them
B) I don't know, but don't you think His birth in an ordinary way through extraordinary means is worth celebrating?
C) Why indeed? We strain at a gnat and swallow a camel (some of my none Cof C friends had never heard that phrase, wonder why it sticks in my mind?)

I think we are sometimes too hard on "our fellowship". David, you and I have spoken about this on several occasions, but I think every "fellowship" has it's own gnats that it strains at. While I see myself as a little more progressive than some others, it may be easy for that very thing to become the gnat that I strain at, if I'm not careful.

The truth is that we are all human, we all are shaped by different occurences and possibly even a genetic component in there somewhere that may lead to a more critical view, but each sees the world through a different lens. If I grow up with an overly ciritical, controlling father, it would be easy for me to view God as overly critical and controlling. Plug in whatever characteristic you want (permissive, loving, hateful), and you can see why people think that religion is a certain way.

Unless the MOTIVES behind peoples' "gnats" or sacred cow is evil, I think we should just expect to run into these from time to time and learn to correct those or deal with them in a loving way, because no matter WHO you are, I guarantee you've got something that fits into that category. A good friend once reminded me that the same grace that covers me will cover my relatives that think the message is a lot narrower than I see it. I need to remind myself of that sometimes.

Although this comment is addressed to Don, it really is for the other readers because I can take 10 steps and tell him this in person.

Don, Great comments and I concur with you 100%! My question was more from the perspective of trying to understand how that came about so as to prevent it from happening again. You know what they say about history repeating itself. I asked a one sentence question without any comments.....not that there weren't any comments that could have been included. I tried to take the high road by asking and NOT commenting. If we get to the point that we can't ask questions and acknowledge our sleeping at the wheel and going in the ditch, we are doomed to go in the ditch again.

Just one person't perspective. You are still my brother figure! :)

So glad to know I'm still your brother figure. I was worried about that after that lard-butt comment last week.
