The Third Greatest Command

I guess we could debate this and never know the true answer, but what would you consider to be the third greatest command after the first two? My guess is that all the rest pale in comparison to the first two, or He would have told us about the third greatest one. Do we communicate by the priorities in our lives that we believe there is a third one that is greater than the first two? Do we communicate it with our theology?

Looking forward to your comments! I hope everybody has a wonderful weekend!

Yes, David, I believe the third greatest command is: "Do things the way we've ALWAYS done it, and then we'll be safe and SOUND"(doctrine inserted after "sound" in newer translations). Have a great weekend yourself! Annie

Interesting question. Mark 12:29-31 says the first two are to love God with all your heart soul mind and strength, and second, love your neighbor as yourself. I'm assuming these are the two you are speaking of, as Jesus said here that these are the first and second greatest commands. I don't know that I could put a third one in this progression, because it seems to me that all the others are wrapped up in these two. (Didn't he also say that?) However, when the young man came to him in Matthew 19:16 and asked what to do for eternal life, Jesus said "keep the commandments". The man asked him "which ones", and Jesus starts off with the last ones in the Exodus list, that is don't murder, commit adultery, steal, or lie, and to honor your father and mother, and to love your neighbor as yourself. (Interesting to me that these go in descending order from the most heinous to the least, at least in what we would normally view them from a human standpoint.) Anyway, the love your neighbor as yourself was the LAST one he listed in this account.

The young man said he had kept all these from his youth.
Then Jesus delivered the zinger: he told him to go and sell all that he had and give it to the poor. This the young man could not do, for he had "great possessions".

I think Jesus did this because he knew it was what was standing between him and God. So I would think that the third commandment would vary from person to person, and it would involve whatever it is that stands between us and God. I would also venture to say (we've talked about this just this week) that for most people, this would involve pride. I think this is the biggie, as it is the one thing that stands between us and God more than any other thing.

Just read the post, and I think my answer would be similar to Don's...I think the 3rd greatest command would be:

"Take up your cross and follow me."

It is not really a command as such but I think the next most important thing is what is summed up in Matt. 25:40 "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine you did for me". When we fail to be compassionate and concerned for our fellow man, we miss the whole point. Some people think you can love them without the visiting in prisons, hospitals and feeding them. As one of my dear friends and a Methodist minister says, this passage will keep more Americans out of heaven that any other...
