What If Our Church Was Taken Away?

In his latest book "Jesus Wants to Save Christians", Rob Bell asks the question:

"If our church was taken away- from our city, our neghborhood, our region- who would protest? Only the people who are members? Only those who are a part of it? Only those who attend services? Single mothers? Refugees? Atheists?"

Of course he is talking about your local congregation.

So, what answers did you come up with?

This is a really POWERFUL book, so go out and get it when you get the chance. It's an easy read, time wise. Application wise, it's not so easy.

Thanks Rob.......I needed your wake up call.

Wow. What a question.

I've seen that question asked before in some slightly different ways. One congregation I've heard of has an annual ritual where they honestly ask themselves the question, "If we shut our doors today and never met again, would the community feel our absence?" They decided if the honest answer to that question was ever "No", then they actually would close their doors. This is a good way to hold ourselves accountable, isn't it?

The more I reflect on this the more I think I may have to find a way to pose this question to my congregation.

Of course, 21st Century Christian just removed quite a few of our churches because one or more of their services use instruments. Amazing.

Oh great, Patrick's bring that argument here!

;-)

That and the reported decline of Churches of Christ in the US has really set the ChurchofChristosphere ablaze.

I need to read that book -and about a couple dozen others!

I blogged a similar question last summer: What if You Couldn't?.

How about this question? What is our church doing for the community that couldn't be done if God died and didn't tell us?

Or, to ask in another way. What is our church doing locally that couldn't be done by a good civic group?

Is God impacting our community through us?

Are men and women boys and girls being made fit for heaven as a result of us being here?

Thanks bro' for making us think.
